Suffolk remodelers from Huntington to Riverhead, grouped by town. Check the county license before you hand over a deposit.
Suffolk County licenses home improvement contractors through its Office of Consumer Affairs, which runs the online lookup and takes complaints about home improvement work. New York’s General Business Law section 771 requires the contractor’s license number, where one applies, in the written contract. If it is missing, ask for it before you sign.
Building permits come from the town or the village, not the county. The Town of Islip publishes the most detailed list of what does and does not need one. The Town of Huntington lists finished basements and additions as permit work and sends village homes to the village building official.
Most of the companies below are clustered in two places: the Town of Huntington on the North Shore, and Riverhead, where two of them run kitchen and bath showrooms.
Grouped by the town each company is based in. Google ratings and review counts are a snapshot from October 2026.

Not always. Rich's Construction says Southampton, East Hampton and Shelter Island each have contractor licensing of their own on top of the county's, so a job there may need both.
Yes. "Finished Basement" is on the Town of Huntington's list of residential permit work, along with additions and alterations. Homes in Asharoken, Huntington Bay, Lloyd Harbor and Northport file with their village instead.
The Town of Islip lists paint, wallpaper, tile, carpet and cabinets as finish work with no permit, and fixture swaps in the same spot unless new piping is involved. Its permit line is 631-224-5466.
